Teatro Sanzio

The Sanzio Theatre represents an example of neoclassical architecture. Construction began in 1845, designed by architect Vincenzo Ghinelli, who envisioned a functional and imposing structure. The theatre stands on the Helicoidal Ramp, one of the most famous Renaissance works designed by Francesco di Giorgio Martini. The theatre opened in 1853 with performances of works by Giuseppe Verdi, marking the beginning of a new cultural era for the city. Over the years, it hosted significant events, including concerts, operas, and theatrical performances of international renown, but in the 20th century, it gradually fell into disrepair.

The Sanzio Theatre was revived in the 1970s through restoration led by architect Giancarlo De Carlo. The restoration, completed in 1982, returned the theatre to its role as a vital cultural space, integrating the building with its urban context.
