Porta Valbona

Valbona Gate is one of Urbino’s historic gateways, located at the entrance to the city center, near Piazza Borgo Mercatale. Built in the 15th century under the rule of Duke Federico da Montefeltro, the gate was renovated in 1621 to celebrate the wedding of Prince Federico Ubaldo della Rovere and Princess Claudia de’ Medici. This renovation gave the structure a monumental appearance.

In the 18th century, architect Carlo Fontana promoted a further intervention: two limestone eagles were added on either side of the gate. These heraldic symbols reflect the city’s power and prestige and highlight its close ties to the Della Rovere family.

Valbona Gate is not only a significant architectural work but also a key witness to Urbino’s history. After the death of Federico Ubaldo in 1631, the Duchy of Urbino came under the direct control of the Papal States, marking the end of its independence. In this context, the gate took on a symbolic meaning tied to this major political transition.
