Porta Lavagine

Porta Lavagine is one of the historic gates that define the walls of Urbino, dating back to the 13th century and located at the eastern end of the city along Via Cesare Battisti. It was built as part of the second city wall to protect Urbino and improve connections with the Metauro valley and nearby Pesaro, an important access route for traffic entering the city.

Over the centuries, Porta Lavagine has undergone several modifications, particularly in the 18th century when an external bastion was demolished to allow easier passage of carts and facilitate access to the city. Despite these changes, the gate still retains much of its original structure, symbolizing the defensive strength of the medieval city.

A particularly intriguing feature of Porta Lavagine is the small church of Santa Maria degli Angeli, located inside the gate.
