Orto Botanico

The “Pierina Scaramella” Botanical Garden of the University of Urbino was founded in 1809 by botanist Giovanni De Brignoli di Brunhoff, in a space that once served as the “great garden” of the friars from the adjacent Church of San Francesco. Located in the historic center, it covers about 2,200 m² across three terraces and hosts numerous plant species, including monumental trees dating back to its foundation. The first terrace includes an arboretum with over 100 species, centered around a historic greenhouse from 1813, restored in 2003. The upper terraces feature beds with medicinal, aquatic, and succulent plants, and specimens classified by the Linnaean system. Of particular artistic value are the frescoed entrance hall and the façade. Today, the Garden serves as a research and teaching support center for the University.
