Chiesa di San Francesco

The Church of San Francesco in Urbino, located in Via Raffaello, is one of the city's most evocative places of worship, with a history that dates back to the 13th century. Originally a Benedictine abbey, in 1286 the church was entrusted to the Franciscan friars, who transformed it into a significant religious center.

Over the centuries, the building has undergone several modifications and expansions. In the 15th century, the entrance was embellished with an elegant stone portico, while in the 18th century, at the behest of Cardinal Annibale Albani (later Pope Clement XI), the church was completely renovated. The works, which began in 1739 and were completed in 1751, resulted in the creation of a new Latin cross layout, with three naves and a majestic dome over the crossing, designed by the architect Filippo Barigioni.

Inside, the church houses numerous priceless works of art, among which stands out "The Pardon of Assisi," painted by Federico Barocci between 1574 and 1576 and the "Crucified Christ" by the Salimbeni brothers.

The church hosts the tombs of prominent figures: the painter Federico Barocci, the mathematician Federico Commandino and the parents of Raphael Sanzio, Giovanni Santi and Magia Ciarla.
