Chiesa di San Domenico

The Church of San Domenico, located in Piazza Rinascimento in Urbino, was founded in 1365 by the Dominicans and expanded in the 15th century thanks to a donation from Bishop Francesco Brancaleoni. In the 18th century, the interior was renovated by architect Filippo Barigioni, giving the church its current appearance. The brick façade is adorned with a Renaissance portal in travertine, created by Maso di Bartolomeo between 1449 and 1451, and a lunette featuring the Madonna with Child and Saints, a work by Luca della Robbia.

The interior has a single nave, with a vaulted ceiling supported by Ionic pilasters. Among the notable paintings are works by Francesco Vanni and the main altar featuring the Madonna of the Rosary with Saints Dominic and Catherine of Siena, attributed to Giovanni Conca. In the side chapels, fragments of frescoes by Antonio Alberti da Ferrara are preserved.

Over the centuries, the church has served various purposes: after the suppression of the convent in the 19th century, it became the diocesan seminary and, more recently, hosts cultural events. After the earthquakes of 1997 and 2016, it was used as a pro-cathedral during the restoration of the Urbino Cathedral.
